Burress is still not practicing

Super Bowl hero Plaxico Burress said he won’t practice with the New York Giants until his troublesome right ankle is sound.

“Of course I definitely want to be out there,” Burress said Sunday after watching the morning workout at the University of Albany in New York. “Like I said, Plaxico Burress has to take care of Plaxico Burress.”

Burress, who caught the game-winning pass in the upset of the New England Patriots, has not practiced since the Giants opened training camp July 25. The last time he practiced was before the Super Bowl. He skipped the optional off-season workouts and refused to take part in the veteran minicamp in June because his contract, which will pay him $3.25 million this season, was not renegotiated.

The veteran wide receiver noted Sunday that he has given up hope that he would get a new deal, although General Manager Jerry Reese said that the team hoped to have a new one by the start of the season.

While a new contract might help, the big issue for Burress is his ankle. He is determined not to let it bother him all season. He injured it in training camp last season and practiced fewer than 10 times because it hurt too much.

Philadelphia Eagles guard Shawn Andrews reported to training camp in Bethlehem, Pa., after missing the first 17 days for unexcused personal reasons.

Andrews told two newspapers last week that he was battling depression, which he said started a year ago and had worsened. He told the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News that he had decided to seek professional help and was on medication.

Andrews has been removed from the reserve/did not report list and placed on the active/physically unable to perform list. It is uncertain when the two-time Pro Bowl selection will practice.

Houston Texans running back Ahman Green will probably sit out an exhibition game against New Orleans this week with a pulled groin, but Coach Gary Kubiak said the injury wasn’t serious.

Green was hurt on the Texans’ first offensive play in Saturday night’s 19-16 exhibition win over Denver.

Cleveland Browns wideout Braylon Edwards was running a sprint in his socks when fellow receiver Donte’ Stallworth stepped on the back of his foot and opened a cut that required stitches and a night in the hospital. Edwards spent Saturday night at the Cleveland Clinic and was released Sunday afternoon. The stay was precautionary, and the injury wasn’t thought to be serious, Browns Coach Romeo Crennel said.

St. Louis Rams cornerback Justin King’s rookie season is over before it started after he tore a ligament in his left big toe in Saturday night’s exhibition opener against Tennessee. The injury will require season-ending surgery.
