TIMES WIRE REPORTS

New death sentences in the U.S. were at or near a three-decade low this year and the number of people executed will be the lowest since 1994, the nonprofit Death Penalty Information Center reported. The center, which opposes capital punishment, has tallied 37 executions in 2008, with no more expected this year. That’s down 12% from 2007 and 30% from 2006.
