Brumbies everywhere

Re “Plight of the brumbies,” Column One, Feb. 12

As heartbreaking as this is, we Americans do the same with our wild horses. When an animal in the wild becomes inconvenient, we kill the animal. The humane methods of reducing feral populations are deemed too expensive or too difficult. It’s cheaper and faster to just kill from an airplane.

As for the brumbies being exotic animals that don’t belong in Australia, let us all remember that almost the entire population of Australia is descended from people who originally arrived from exotic locations.

Thank you for the article on Jan Carter’s attempts to help save the brumbies in Australia.

Wild horses deserve better treatment than airstrikes, and Carter is an angel to these creatures that cannot protect themselves. Similar problems exist with the United States’ “management” of wild mustangs. There has to be a better way of controlling the population.
