Owens says he’ll play on Sunday
Terrell Owens warmed up for practice Friday, then went to see a trainer about his injured ankle.
The Dallas Cowboys wide receiver felt so good he wanted the protective tape he’d been wearing cut off. Then he ran to join his teammates who were lined up to stretch, slapping hands and practically doing a victory lap on his way to his spot, complete with waving his right index finger.
“I’m good,” Owens said later, at his locker. “See you Sunday.”
The team’s official report listed his participation in practice as limited and his game status as questionable.
Coach Wade Phillips was more hopeful about having his All-Pro receiver in the lineup Sunday against the New York Giants. Phillips added that if Owens can play, he’ll start.
“Terrell said he’s going to play and I believe him. I think he will attempt to play and we will let him,” Phillips said.
“To what degree, at what level, remains to be seen in the game. Unless something unforeseen happens, I think he probably will [play].”
The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed wide receiver Charles Sharon to the active roster and waived wide receiver Chad Owens.
The move gives Jacksonville extra assurance in case starter Reggie Williams can’t play tonight at New England.
Williams (back) did not practice Thursday but went through light drills Friday and was expected to play.
Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, once considered a possible successor to Coach Romeo Crennel, was fired after the team finished the season with one of the league’s worst defenses.
Grantham’s dismissal was a surprise, coming only months after he signed a two-year contract extension.
Crennel favors continuity on his staff and will give defensive backs coach Mel Tucker strong consideration. Tucker has been with the team for three seasons and is popular with the players.
Kyle Shanahan was promoted to offensive coordinator of the Houston Texans, making him the youngest coach at that position in the NFL.
The 28-year-old son of Denver Coach Mike Shanahan replaces Mike Sherman, who spent two seasons with the Texans before being named head coach at Texas A&M; in late November.
Shanahan is almost three years younger than Josh McDaniels, the 31-year-old New England offensive coordinator who was previously the NFL’s youngest to hold the job.
Denver Broncos tight end Daniel Graham was arrested on a charge of harassing his ex-girlfriend.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department said the 29-year-old Graham was arrested in Aurora, Colo., on suspicion of criminal mischief and harassment and released on a personal recognizance bond.
The woman told deputies Thursday that Graham hit and damaged a bedpost after the couple argued over the sale of their home, and that he refused to leave. She said the incident occurred Sunday.
