Reef watchdogs
Re “Reef madness,” Opinion, June 1
Margaret Wertheim writes that “scientists have only just begun to seriously map marine biodiversity.”
For the last 12 years, a scientific and conservationist organization has been doing precisely that. It is the Pacific Palisades-based Reef Check Foundation.
The foundation and its corps of volunteer divers have been inventorying, classifying and building databases on the life forms of both coral and stony reefs worldwide since 1996.
That is not “only just begun.”
