Mike Lamb singled with one out, Joe Mauer doubled and Justin Morneau was intentionally walked to load the bases. Lamb scored on Michael Cuddyer’s groundout to give the Twins a 1-0 lead. Cuddyer singled in Lamb in the sixth and Craig Monroe homered after Verlander walked Delmon Young on four pitches with none out in the seventh.

at Boston 12, Tampa Bay 4: James Shields pitched a two-hit shutout in his last start Sunday against the Red Sox, but he gave up three runs before retiring a batter. He lasted 3 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs and 10 hits.

Kansas City 4, at Cleveland 2: Billy Butler’s tiebreaking single keyed a four-run seventh inning. C.C. Sabathia (1-5) took a shutout into the seventh before the Royals strung together six hits against the reigning Cy Young Award winner and three relievers.

Texas 6, at Oakland 3: A.J. Murray yielded two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings a day after being called up from the minors.
