Drew’s cycle leads the Diamondbacks

PHOENIX -- Stephen Drew became the first player to hit for the cycle in Chase Field, and newly acquired David Eckstein singled home the winning run to help the Arizona Diamondbacks rally past the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-6, Monday.

Adam Dunn, Chris Young and Mark Reynolds also homered for the Diamondbacks, who overcame a poor start by Randy Johnson.

Batting leadoff, Drew singled in the first inning, tripled in the third and homered in the fifth against starter Joel Pineiro. He hit a ground-rule double in the seventh against Kyle McClellan (2-7).

Drew hit a double in the eighth inning for his fifth hit, matching a career high and becoming the 12th Diamondback to have five hits in a game.

Drew also became the third Diamondback to hit for the cycle in the franchise’s 11-year history. Luis Gonzalez did it July 5, 2000, at Houston and Greg Colbrunn did it Sept. 18, 2002, at San Diego.

Arizona took the lead for the first time in the seventh inning on a single by Eckstein, who was acquired from Toronto on Sunday and started at second base.
