Love you, Blue
I have become impressed with both Andre Ethier’s character as a teammate and his potential for learning the lessons of others. Asked about the reason for his recent success at the plate, Ethier could say what veteran leader Jeff Kent could not after his own hot streak: “Two words, Manny Ramirez.”
As a future Hall of Famer, Jeff is a quick study, but apparently not in terms of modesty or giving credit to teammates, even other future Hall of Famers. In defense of Kent, though, he did have to play all those years with Barry Bonds; not much to learn there.

The other players may call Greg Maddux “The Professor,” but his tenure has long expired.

For all us fans of “Leave It to Beaver,” we all know the Eddie Haskell character: destructive when around Beaver and Eddie’s peers, but while around adults such as June and Ward Cleaver, Eddie is a proper angel. I don’t know how much of the script Scott Boras gave Manny Ramirez, but Manny certainly has played like destructive Eddie to get out of Boston and angelic Eddie to get the Dodgers to first place.

Last Saturday you printed another cheap shot at Charley Steiner.
Some of us actually enjoy this engaging, enthusiastic, humorous, talented play-by-play announcer. He’s such a relief from Ross Porter, for whom play-by-play was an afterthought that interfered with his unrelenting barrage of meaningless statistics.
And, Charley has also reduced Rick Monday’s pompous prattle and improved his work product.

Regarding T.J. Simers’ push for a bronze sculpture immortalizing Vin Scully with a sound chip of his more famous calls: Koufax’s perfect game, sure. Gibson’s home run, of course. How about Jeff Kent’s hitting .500 in front of Manny Ramirez? If Kent thinks Scully talks too much now . . .

Kudos to Sandy Scully for letting her old man continue to leave the house after dark. She had an opportunity to become the most hated woman in Los Angeles. Instead, she’s been named Person of the Year by the members of the Vin Scully Marching and Chowder Society. Her $20 book of Union Oil Auto Scrip is in the mail.
