Royal edges Thousand Oaks
FRIDAY’S RESULT
Simi Valley Royal 5, Thousand Oaks 4
Leading contributors: Clayton Elliott and Jeff Winters each drove in a run for No. 7 Royal. Avondre Bollar hit a solo homer and Dustin Kahle was two for three with two doubles and two runs batted in for No. 20 Thousand Oaks.
The scoop: Bryan Berglund’s three-run, walk-off double in the seventh inning completed Royal’s comeback from a 4-2 deficit. It was the second walk-off hit of the season for Berglund, who had a grand slam against West Hills Chaminade. “It’s probably one of the greatest feelings in the world,” Berglund said of his late-game contribution against the Lancers.
Why it matters: Royal moved a game ahead of Thousand Oaks in the Marmonte League and remained within striking distance of league leader Simi Valley.
Records: Royal 11-2, 4-2; Thousand Oaks 8-5, 3-3.
HIGH SCHOOL GAME OF THE DAY
Santa Margarita (7-4, 3-1) at San Juan Capistrano JSerra (7-4, 3-1) Tonight, 6
Why it matters: JSerra ace Joe Kurrasch (2-1, 1.14 earned-run average), who transferred from Santa Margarita after his sophomore year, faces his former teammates in a battle of teams tied with Santa Ana Mater Dei atop the Trinity League. Santa Margarita will counter with ace Robert Kelly (4-0, 1.96 ERA), who struck out 10 during a victory over Mater Dei last week. JSerra is ranked No. 25 in the Southland by The Times and Santa Margarita is No. 9.
