A Berlin court has ruled that a Jewish poster collector’s son living in the U.S. is the rightful owner of a rare poster confiscated by the Nazis.
A panel of three administrative court judges says Hans Sachs never lost legal ownership to his poster collection when the Gestapo seized it.
Sachs’ son, Peter, a 71-year-old resident of Sarasota, Fla., is trying to reclaim 4,000 of his father’s posters from the German Historical Museum in Berlin. The posters are worth about $5.8 million.
The court’s ruling Tuesday applied only to one poster but is expected to be used as a precedent for the return of the entire collection.
