CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / CHULA VISTA

Police were able to arrest a suspect in a robbery and grand theft case in an unusual spot: when he arrived to take an exam to join the police department.

Romeo Ogilve Montillano of San Diego was arrested for allegedly stealing a television, DVD and telephone from a local Kmart store and scuffling with security guards before escaping. Using a car license number, detectives traced Montillano and called him, not giving the reason for the call.

He explained that he was in Las Vegas but would return soon to Chula Vista to take the police exam. When he arrived to take the test, officers arrested him “after getting over their disbelief” that he actually showed up, officials said.
