Ultimate mess
T.J. Simers was right on in his evaluation of the latest UFC human cockfight bloodbath. He exposed bad guy Brock Lesnar as a relatively thoughtful and intelligent athlete in real life, a persona that doesn’t sell many tickets or pay-per-view buys. Consequently, Lesnar plays the clown-villain and UFC becomes pro wrestling with more blood. The wrestling part of this cash cow is comical, but the blood sport aspect is deeply troubling. It’s not about athleticism or competition to the fans, it’s about violence. To the UFC, of course, it’s about money, and by appealing to the absolute lowest common denominator they get rich.
Two consenting adults should be able to engage in these horrible exhibitions, but someday I hope that people are evolved enough to not be entertained by people really hurting each other. We can do better than that. We can be better than that.

Great coverage of this important sport! But why no coverage of dogfighting or cockfighting? Why not editorialize to make UFC more manly by eliminating referees, so fights can go to their logical, definitive conclusion (death)? How about boosting the paper’s revenue by renting the Coliseum and reviving the glory that was ancient Rome?

While I guess that the Fertitta brothers should be applauded for their business acumen and good fortune in taking a chance on the UFC -- after all, they are laughing all the way to the bank -- my own applause is minimal, at best. For me, combat sports are simply further evidence of the decline of Western culture. It is testosterone-fueled stupidity.
