More to see and do in London
My husband and I are frequent visitors to London -- our first trip being in 1969. We enjoyed Chris Erskine’s article [“A First-Timer’s Guide to London,” June 14]. It was fun to get a fresh interpretation of one of our favorite cities.
He is right on when he says “don’t rent a car” -- the closest we ever came to divorce was the two times we tried driving ourselves across London.
Erskine did miss several things that might be of interest to American visitors. You can tour the war rooms under Downing Street, where Churchill and his Cabinet holed up during the bombings of London during World War II. There are actual recordings of Churchill and FDR in conversation by phone.
Second, just off Trafalgar is the Benjamin Franklin house, the only building still standing in which Franklin actually lived. They do tours and reenactments.
Third, is Camden Town and the flea market -- an amazing area of treasures and junk that is fun to browse, especially for the young.
And though it’s not exactly London, it’s not far to Windsor Castle, just down the road from Runnymede (think Magna Carta) for the history buffs.
