Carson landfill site owners plan to install gas collection system
Owners of a large former landfill in Carson have taken a major step toward preparing the site to be developed as a retail and residential complex.
Newport Beach developers LNR Property Corp. and Hopkins Real Estate Group said Tuesday that they were ready to install a ground gas collection and treatment system that would provide a way for methane gas created by the waste in the landfill to be safely vented out of the ground.
The site has already been graded and its soil cleaned in preparation for the planned $800-million mixed-use development along the San Diego Freeway between Avalon and Del Amo boulevards.
If the proposed gas collection system is approved by the South Coast Air Quality Management District, it will be installed over a six- to nine-month period in areas of the site that are not planned to have buildings or slabs constructed. There would be a separate installation process for areas where buildings would be erected.
Gas collection systems are intended to pick up emissions such as methane that rise from decomposing waste and vent them safely. Landfill gases can pose health and safety concerns, including explosion hazards, if not managed properly.
The 168-acre complex, to be called the Boulevards at South Bay, would have more than 1 million square feet of stores and restaurants, as many as 1,550 apartments or condominiums and 300 hotel rooms. It is set for completion in early 2012.
The landfill closed in 1965. It has been the subject of several proposed developments.
