Esperanza defeats Marina, 3-2
GAME OF THE DAY
Anaheim Esperanza 3, Huntington Beach Marina 2 (8 innings)
Top contributors: Gary Apelian of Esperanza gave up two unearned runs in seven innings. Justin Viele of Esperanza had two hits. Chad Lewis of Marina had two hits.
The scoop: Clay Shepard hit a one-out home run over the left-field fence in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Esperanza the surprising victory in a Sunset League game.
Why it matters: With Huntington Beach Edison defeating Los Alamitos, 4-0, behind an 11-strikeout performance by sophomore Henry Owens, Edison took a one-game lead over Marina and clinched the No. 1 seeding from the Sunset League for the Southern Section Division I playoffs. Marina will finish No. 2 and Esperanza No. 3.
Records: Esperanza 13-11-1, 8-6; Marina 20-5, 10-4.
