CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / PASADENA
An 80-year-old man died in a fire at a residential facility Friday, authorities said.
The fire broke out at 5:40 p.m. at a building in the 600 block of Del Monte Street, just east of the Rose Bowl, said Lisa Derderian of the Pasadena Fire Department.
The facility, which rents rooms to boarders, was quickly enveloped in heavy smoke and flames. The 80-year-old was not identified pending notification of his relatives. In addition, a man in his 60s was treated for smoke inhalation.
Red Cross officials were on scene assisting at least 11 other residents who were left homeless by the fire, Derderian said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
