Raiders ‘evaluate’ allegations

The Oakland Raiders enter their bye week in similar fashion to the way they started the season: coming off a close loss to the San Diego Chargers and with more allegations being thrown at Coach Tom Cable.

What happened between a 24-20 season-opening loss to San Diego and Sunday’s 24-16 defeat has been more dysfunction around the NFL’s worst team over the last seven seasons.

The Raiders (2-6) have lost four games by at least 20 points, have taken dramatic steps back offensively and have been in the news for all the wrong reasons.

Cable was accused in training camp of assaulting defensive assistant Randy Hanson and breaking his jaw.

Cable was officially cleared by the Napa County district attorney late last month, but during the weekend he was hit with allegations that he has a history of violent behavior toward women.

When asked Monday about his future, Cable responded: “I’m coaching the Raiders and I think my future is to be the coach of the Raiders.”

The Raiders said they will undertake a “serious evaluation” of the domestic violence allegations against Cable.

Chiefs settle

The Kansas City Chiefs, apparently fearful of losing in arbitration, agreed to cut Larry Johnson’s suspension in half for making gay slurs.

The agreement saved the running back about $315,000. The Chiefs issued a terse announcement saying they had made the settlement in conjunction with the NFL Management Council and the NFL Players Assn. Originally, they suspended the two-time Pro Bowler two weeks, which would have cost him about $630,000.

He will still miss the game at Jacksonville this week.

Browns’ GM out

The Cleveland Browns are without a general manager after George Kokinis left the club under unexplained circumstances.

After reports surfaced that Kokinis was fired, the team issued an awkwardly worded statement Monday night saying the GM “is no longer actively involved with the organization.” The Browns also denied reports that Kokinis was escorted from their team headquarters.

Two longtime Browns season-ticket holders organizing a protest to show their disgust with a decade of losing will meet today with team owner Randy Lerner.

Green Bay Packers Coach Mike McCarthy said quarterback Aaron Rodgers could miss time in practice because of a sprained toe but is expected to play Sunday at Tampa Bay without losing mobility. . . . Arizona receiver Anquan Boldin hopes to play at Chicago this week despite aggravating a right ankle sprain. Boldin reinjured his ankle in a loss to Carolina on Sunday. . . . Houston tight end Owen Daniels has a torn knee ligament and will have season-ending surgery. . . . The San Diego Chargers have released wide receiver Chris Chambers a day after he had a key catch against the Raiders. Coach Norv Turner said Chambers was released because of the emergence of Malcom Floyd and the need to sign a linebacker.
