Top-ranked Crenshaw takes on Culver City

No. 1 Los Angeles Crenshaw (4-0) at Culver City (3-0), 7 p.m. -- Crenshaw is averaging 43 points, one fewer than Culver City averages with an offense featuring quarterback Marquel Carter and tailback Edwin Tillman, a converted receiver. Carter has accounted for 14 touchdowns, nine passing and five rushing, in three games. Crenshaw is led by tailback DeAnthony Thomas and receiver Geno Hall, who has a knack for making amazing catches. “We have to match them score for score,” said Culver City Coach Jahmal Wright. “Defensively, hopefully we can get some stops.” The teams have split their last two meetings.Crenshaw won last year, 21-14. No. 2 Westlake Village Oaks Christian (3-0) at Venice (3-0), 7 p.m. -- Venice upset Oaks Christian, 41-35, two years ago when the Lions were between celebrity quarterbacks. Oaks Christian once again has star power -- Nick Montana, son of Joe, is the quarterback and running back Malcolm Jones is headed to either UCLA or Stanford -- but the Gondoliers intend to do more than compete. “We’re not playing for respect,” said Venice Coach Angelo Gasca. “We’re playing to win the game.” The Gondoliers will lean on Alfonso Medina, who has completed 60.3% of his passes for an average of 218 yards a game, and Aaron Jones, who is averaging 108 yards rushing a game. No. 4 Ventura St. Bonaventure (4-0) at La Puente Bishop Amat (3-0), 7:30 p.m. -- Bishop Amat is the only unbeaten team in the Serra League, but that might primarily be a function of avoiding top-level competition until this week. St. Bonaventure is contending for a third consecutive state championship bowl berth following a 42-41 overtime victory against Encino Crespi. Jerry McClanahan passed for three touchdowns and Jay Anderson rushed for 107 yards last week in Bishop Amat’s 29-20 victory against La Verne Damien. The pick: St. Bonaventure.

No. 6 Anaheim Servite (3-1) at No. 16 Temecula Chaparral (2-1), Saturday, 7 p.m. -- Servite hopes to bounce back from a 23-9 loss to Huntington Beach Edison in which the Friars’ longest play from scrimmage was a 26-yard run by quarterback Cody Fajardo. Chaparral rolled up an average of 48 points in victories against Menifee Paloma Valley and Moreno Valley Valley View after opening the season with a 31-27 loss to Corona Centennial. Quarterback Mitch Glasmann and running back Jonathan Diaz contributed to a 540-yard offensive explosion last week against Valley View. The pick: Servite.
