Boston 11, at Baltimore 5: Jon Lester (14-7) pitched into the seventh inning to win his sixth decision in a row, and the Red Sox dropped their magic number to clinch the American League wild card to nine.
at Chicago 13, Kansas City 3: Jake Peavy (1-0) gave up three runs and three hits over five innings and Carlos Quentin hit a grand slam. Peavy hadn’t pitched in a major league game since June 8 while with San Diego. He had been on the disabled list because of a strained tendon in his right ankle.
New York 10, at Seattle 1: Mark Teixeira hit two home runs and drove in five runs to back up CC Sabathia (18-7), who gave up four hits and one run in seven innings.
at Tampa Bay 4, Toronto 0: Matt Garza (8-10) struck out 10 over 7 1/3 innings and ended a personal winless streak at nine games. His three wins in his last 15 starts have been against Toronto.
at Oakland 8, Cleveland 4: Mark Ellis hit a home run to set the Athletics franchise record for a second baseman with 77 to move past Dick Green. Ellis has 79 home runs in his career.
at Texas 3, Angels 2: Hank Blalock hit a home run in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie.
