Two fugitives captured in Mexico and returned to U.S.
A man charged with a double homicide in Lynwood and another man charged with two attempted sexual assaults in Laguna Nigel have been returned to authorities in California after being captured in Mexico, the FBI said Monday.
Eduardo Gilbert Nevarez was charged in the February 2001 slayings in Lynwood. He was also charged with parole violations after serving time in California state prison for distributing narcotics, according to the FBI. He has ties to a Lynwood street gang, authorities said.
Mexican law enforcement, working with the bureau, captured Nevarez and deported him June 9, said Laura Eimiller, an FBI spokeswoman in Los Angeles. He had been living in Mexico as an illegal immigrant.
The other man, Daniel Morales, fled to Mexico after he allegedly broke into the Laguna Nigel home of a female relative in March 2004 and attacked her and a female child, the FBI said.
As Morales tried to attack the woman, she ran and grabbed a telephone, but he yanked the phone from the wall, according to the FBI. He then tried to rape and sodomize the victim, authorities said. The woman was tied up with sheets that Morales had ripped up.
Morales then turned on the child, who was inside the home when assault began, according to the FBI. He allegedly tried to rape and sodomize the girl, tied her up and fled, the FBI said.
Authorities suspected that Morales had fled to Mexico after he was charged in Orange County with attempted rape and sodomy of the adult victim and forcible lewd acts on a minor for the assault against the child, according to the FBI.
He was captured in Mexicali and returned to California on June 15.
