Cammi Granato, Angela James, Dino Ciccarelli named to Hockey Hall of Fame

Dino Ciccarelli was the only former NHL player elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Class of 2010, but he will be joined in the players’ category by two pioneers of the women’s game.

Ciccarelli, who began his career with the Minnesota North Stars and played for five teams over 19 NHL seasons, scored 608 goals and 592 assists in 1,232 games. Also elected was Cammi Granato, who led Team USA to the gold medal in the 1998 Winter Olympics, the first Games that included a women’s hockey tournament.

The other women’s pioneer elected was Angela James, who starred in the 1970s and early 1980s in the Central Ontario Women’s League and was the league’s leading scorer for eight seasons and the MVP six times.

The San Jose Sharks are cutting ties with goaltender Evgeni Nabokov.

Nabokov has been one of the top goalies in the league the past few years, winning an NHL-best 131 games over the past three seasons.

Pat Quinn was removed as coach of the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday after his team finished with the worst record in the league in his first season. He was replaced by Oilers assistant Tom Renney, who will be running his third NHL team.

The NHL Players’ Assn. is extending its current collective bargaining agreement with the league through the 2011-12 season.

The decision to stretch the agreement for another season was made during the union’s executive board meeting on Tuesday. The CBA was originally set to expire after the upcoming season, but the players’ association exercised its right to extend it for a seventh year.

Armstrong will ride in Tour de France

Team RadioShack has confirmed that Lance Armstrong will ride in next month’s Tour de France.

Team director Johan Bruyneel said that seven-time Tour winner Armstrong will be joined by Andreas Kloeden of Germany, Americans Levi Leipheimer and Chris Horner, and Janez Brajkovic of Slovenia.

The 38-year-old Armstrong finished second in the Tour of Switzerland on Sunday, performing well in the mountain stages and the time trials.

The Milwaukee Bucks have acquired forward Corey Maggette in a trade with the Golden State Warriors, sending them guard Charlie Bell and center Dan Gadzuric in return. The Bucks also get a second-round pick from the Warriors in Thursday’s NBA draft.

Maggette played in 70 games with 49 starts for Golden State last season, averaging 19.8 points per game.

Laura Myers has been named the fourth annual Harry Ornest sports journalism intern at The Times and has begun her summer duties. The grant, from the Ornest Family Foundation in honor of their late father, who was a pro sports owner ( St. Louis Blues, Toronto Argonauts), annually honors a top student in the Gallivan Program for Journalism, Ethics and Democracy at the University of Notre Dame.
