Angels rally to beat Texas, 9-6
Angels 9, Texas 6
AT THE PLATE: The Angels rallied for four runs in the sixth inning, which featured Hideki Matsui’s double, run-scoring doubles by Kendry Morales and Howie Kendrick, and Jeff Mathis’ two-run single. Morales and Kendrick also had RBI singles in the fourth, and Maicer Izturis hit a two-run double in the seventh.
ON THE MOUND: Closer Brian Fuentes gave up one hit and struck out one in a scoreless fifth inning. The left-hander has allowed one earned run and six hits in 6 2/3 innings of seven games this spring. Long reliever Brian Stokes allowed one run and two hits in two innings, striking out two and walking one.
EXTRA BASES: Mathis, the Angels catcher, had an excellent day behind the plate, making a quick throw to third base in the fifth inning to cut down Joaquin Arias, who was attempting to steal, and making a strong throw to second in the sixth inning to throw out Elvis Andrus, who also was attempting to steal.
UP NEXT: Jered Weaver, the Angels’ expected opening-day starter, will oppose San Francisco ace Tim Lincecum, who has won the last two National League Cy Young awards, in Friday’s 1 p.m. game at Scottsdale, Ariz.
