N.J. tanning bed mom calls ‘SNL’ impression ‘hysterical’

It looks as if the New Jersey tanning bed mom is enjoying her day in the sun.

Patricia Krentcil was the subject of a Weekend Update segment on “Saturday Night Live” in which Oscar-nominee Kristen Wiig posed as the now-notorious tanner.

“The whole thing was hysterical,” Krentcil told the New York Post on Sunday. “It was well done.”

The comment suggests that Krentcil might have a biting sense of humor of her own: The entire skit played off the notion that Krentcil, 44, has cooked herself to a crisp.

Krentcil pleaded not guilty last week to a child-endangerment charge that she allegedly placed her 5-year-old daughter in a tanning bed. She acknowledges a penchant for tanning, but says she would never allow her daughter to use a fake bake, and describes the charge and uproar as a witch hunt. (Krentcil says her daughter got sunburned the old fashioned way -- by being in the sun for too long.) The media, meanwhile, have become somewhat obsessed with Krentcil and her burnished brown hue.

In the “Saturday Night Live” skit, Wiig arrives onstage as Krentcil, followed by a swirl of smoke. At several points, she stops to drink some water because she’s parched from the inside out. The segment wraps up with Wiig putting a piece of white bread between her thighs for a second -- and then retrieving a charred piece of toast.

Perhaps the beauty of the segment goes beyond the one-liners: Wiig is made up to be a dead ringer for Krentcil, down to the bow in her bleached-blond hair.

And let’s hear it for Krentcil.

She may tan far more than the rest of us. But she appears to sport a trait that the majority of us can use: The ability to laugh at ourselves.
