Chapped lips, flyaway hair, dry skin, cracked elbows -- Southern California winters may be mild, but they still cause beauty problems.
“Independent of where you live, your skincare regimen needs to change with the seasons,” says Dr. Ava Shamban, a dermatologist and author of “Heal Your Skin,” a book that lays out regimens for improving complexions.
“The most common complaint people have about their skincare in the winter is that it’s no longer doing its job,” she says.
Experts say that just as the contents of a wardrobe shift to accommodate the change in weather, so should what’s on the bathroom shelf. Making it easier, many beauty lines have unveiled specific seasonal products -- lipid-rich creams, hydrating serums and nourishing lip salves.
Some of the new products serve multiple purposes. Garnier’s Triple Nutrition Miracle Dry Oil ($5.99) works on hair, face and body, using fruit oils to soften dry skin and take care of frizzy hair. LeAine Dehmer Clinical Skin Care’s 14-Day Recovery Balme ($125 to $395) has ginseng and lotus for lips, hands, elbows and cuticles. Derma E’s Cracked Skin Relief Creme, $13.50, contains bay leaf oil, clove, arnica and aloe vera for allover use.
