L.A. (sort of) represents on Dwell’s national indie bookstore map

If you have a favorite independent bookstore, Dwell magazine wants to know about it.

The lifestyle magazine has a nationwide map that it hopes will be “the biggest, most bibliographic map of independent bookstores in the United States.” Launched last year, its ever-growing list includes more than 100 bookstores.

Not every state is yet represented; Arkansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and Nevada are absent. Alaska has a few, but Hawaii does not.

The list includes nationally known bookstores such as Powell’s in Portland, Ore., Tattered Cover in Denver and Book People in Austin, Texas. Parnassus Books in Nashville, which Ann Patchett opened because the city had lost almost all of its bookstores, is on the map.

The magazine is asking readers to submit suggestions for additions. Those who have reflect a certain independent, book-oriented sensibility; one reader suggests a book, saying it would make a nice gift “for that dweeb who gave you a Kindle last Xmas.”

Not all Southern California bookstores are on the map; in fact, there are just seven. Those that do appear are the Last Bookstore, located in downtown Los Angeles, Gatsby Books in Long Beach, Once Upon a Time in Montrose, Chevalier’s Books in Larchmont, Book Soup in West Hollywood, Skylight Books in Los Feliz and Vroman’s in Pasadena.

Maybe someone from Mysterious Galaxy, Diesel and other fantastic local bookstores will add them to the list.
