Ford releases special edition of Raptor truck

Just two weeks after Shelby American introduced a supercharged Ford Raptor at the 2013 New York Auto Show, Ford itself announced a special edition package for its meanest truck on the lot.

The F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition makes no mechanical changes to the base Raptor that Highway 1 tested in 2011, but instead focuses on the pretty stuff. A ruby red metallic paint joins the color palette, accented by unique graphics on the truck’s bed.

Inside, the Special Edition gets uniquely trimmed seats and other accents. Ford said this edition is set to go on sale this fall.

The powertrain remains the same. A 6.2-liter V-8 engine makes 411 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard, as are FOX Racing Shocks and a limited-slip differential. The Raptor comes in two-door or four-door configurations.

The Raptor version of the F-150 has proved immensely popular for Ford. Doug Scott, manager of the company’s truck group, said it’s Ford’s fastest-selling vehicle on the lot, with an average time with the dealer being around 15 days.

Ford sold 13,000 Raptors in 2012, and said sales are already up 14% so far in 2013.

With the truck proving a popular item, it wasn’t surprising that Shelby would get involved. The Las Vegas-based company brought a Shelby Raptor to the N.Y. Auto Show.

Changes included a supercharger that boosts horsepower to 575, and a custom Shelby Borla exhaust. The package adds $18,000 to the price of the Ford Raptor.
