Porsche recalling 911 Carrera, Carrera 4 cars for faulty tailpipes

The Porsche 911 was the highest-rated premium sporty car in the J.D. Power and Associates 2012 Initial Quality Study, but some 2012 and 2013 versions of the car have a tailpipe that might fall off.

Porsche is recalling 2,263 of its 2012-2013 model year 911 Carrera and Carrera 4 cars because of the problem with the exhaust pipe system.

The German automaker said that the exhaust tailpipe on the cars might fracture and fall off the rear muffler.

The recall affects cars that were equipped with standard (not sport) exhaust systems and were built last year from March 7 through Nov. 12.

The 911 Carrera commonly sells for $85,000 to more than $100,000. The more expensive Carerra 4 can top $140,000.

A recall notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website said that the problem could be hazardous for other vehicles and increase the risk of a crash.

Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear mufflers free of charge. The automaker hasn’t provided a notification schedule.
