Sean Gallagher to head L.A. Times online newsroom operations
The Los Angeles Times has named Sean Gallagher to run its online newsroom operations and oversee the Los Angeles Times Media Group’s growing portfolio of digital properties.
Gallagher will assume the title of managing editor, online, Times Editor Russ Stanton said in a statement. Gallagher had been serving as managing editor of the newspaper’s website, latimes.com.
“Sean’s talent, integrity and command of virtually every facet of online publishing have been crucial to latimes.com’s success,” Stanton said. “He will provide valuable leadership as we continue to evolve and has already played a key role in helping shape our round-the-clock, fully integrated newsroom.”
Gallagher succeeds Meredith Artley, who oversaw a recent redesign of latimes.com. Artley left this month to take a job at CNN.com.
Gallagher joined latimes .com in 2006 as an associate editor and was promoted to managing editor in 2007. In his new post, he will continue to supervise the website while also working with Jon Thurber, managing editor of the print operation, and other newsroom managers to ensure continued integration of the newspaper’s print and online editions.
“I’m looking forward to working closely with the Times staff to drive innovation on the Web,” Gallagher said. “We’ve built the best-in-class site. But we’re not going to stop there. We will continue to grow the site as the premier destination for Southern Californians.”
Before joining The Times, Gallagher was Web director of the San Diego Daily Transcript and spent more than five years at nytimes.com. He also has worked at the Village Voice as a researcher and at Scholastic Books as a production editor. He’s a graduate of Fordham University in New York.
