Public courtyard to open Thursday as Macy’s Plaza becomes the Bloc
The outdoor courtyard of the former Macy’s Plaza in downtown Los Angeles is opening Thursday, a major step in the $180-million revamp of the shopping center.
Renovations at the mall, now renamed the Bloc, include removing the roof and breaching the walls to make way for restaurants and shops that will open out onto the street.
At the center is the public courtyard, dubbed the Square. That’s where a series of summer events will kick off Thursday, with live jazz and food trucks.

Macy’s, which has been open during construction, will remain the anchor tenant. A handful of new tenants have already been announced including the dine-in movie theater chain Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, Starbucks and Free Market, a concept shop that will include a number of retailers. Stores and restaurants will start opening later this summer.
The renovation includes building an underground tunnel for pedestrians that will link the Bloc to the 7th Street/Metro Center Station.
