Polish airline may ask Boeing to pay up for grounded Dreamliners

The Polish airline LOT had planned a big airport party in Chicago with Mayor Rahm Emanuel set to attend.

Unfortunately, the celebration was to show off one of the airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliners. LOT is the only European airline to have put the new high-tech jumbo jet in service, and Wednesday night was to mark its first Dreamliner flight originating in the U.S.

The Chicago-to-Warsaw flight was canceled when the Federal Aviation Agency and the European Aviation Safety Agency grounded the Dreamliners after a series of mishaps including fuel spills and a fire.

The passengers who booked the flight were offered travel on other airlines, plus meals and hotel accommodations, LOT said in an email. In a statement, the Polish airline said, “we would like to confirm that LOT will cooperate both with Boeing and FAA to develop a corrective action plan to allow our fleet to resume operations.”

Behind the polite statement, LOT executives were upset and indicated they would ask the airline manufacturer for compensation, Associated Press reported from Warsaw.

In the meantime, Boeing is continuing production of new 787s at its assembly plant in North Charleston, S.C., which employs 6,000 workers, according to a separate AP report.
