Pasadena hacienda built by Franklin Otis Booth Jr. seeks $3 million

A Pasadena home designed by and built for Franklin Otis Booth Jr., a former Los Angeles Times executive and great-grandson of Times Mirror Co. founder Gen. Harrison Gray Otis, has come on the market for $2.995 million.

Booth, who also was an engineer and a philanthropist, amassed a billion-dollar fortune as an early investor in Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway. He died in 2008 at the age of 84.

The hacienda-style house, completed in 1949, has been extensively renovated and restored by its current owners, according to listing agent Brent Chang of Compass.

“My sellers added newer rooms like the kitchen and bathrooms, but they tried keeping the common thread of the architecture throughout the house,” Chang said. “They kept the steel and lead windows, solid Douglas fir doors and antique fixtures; the wood-paneling was restored.”

Also of note are the library built-ins that were reproduced using reclaimed oak. The kitchen has been updated with a wine cooler, an 8-burner range and a marble-topped island. The traditional wood-beam and cathedral-ceiling living room boasts a fireplace surrounded on both sides by built-ins.

There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms in 3,321 square feet of living space plus a 323-square-foot casita.

New drought-tolerant landscaping surrounds the front and rear of the property. Lawns, specimen trees and a swimming pool surrounded in brick complete the nearly half-acre setting.
