Onetime Encino home of actor Paul Muni retains star qualities

This home in the Amestoy Estates area of Encino was once owned by actor Paul Muni, who starred in such 1930s films as “Scarface,” “The Good Earth” and “The Story of Louis Pasteur,” for which he won an Oscar.

Listed at $2.995 million, the Georgian-style house last sold in 1971 for $100,000.

Expanded and remodeled over the decades, the 1940s home is entered through a foyer with stained-glass windows and a coffered ceiling.

The formal floor plan includes a den, an office, a breakfast room, a two-story library, a pine-paneled study, a media room, a gym and a sunroom. There are nine bedrooms, nine bathrooms in 9,080 square feet of living space.

The guest apartment above the three-car garage has a living room with a fireplace, a kitchen and a bathroom.

The less than an acre of grounds contains mature trees, a sports court and a swimming pool with spa.

Muni, who died in 1967 at 71, was a star of stage and screen. He became a hot commodity as a leading man at Warner Bros. in the 1930s. His last starring role in his 50 years of acting was in the 1959 film “The Last Angry Man.” He retired and in 1962 moved from Encino to Montecito.
