Apple to fix ‘black/white screen of death’ bug that hits some iPhones

Apple said it plans to release a software update that will get rid of a bug that causes some iPhones running iOS 7 to randomly restart.

Some users have reported that their devices will crash and show a black or white screen with the Apple logo before restarting on their own. Some say the problem occurs when battery power falls below 30%.

The problem has come to be known as the “black/white screen of death.” The color of the crash screen is determined by the color of the device, meaning a white iPhone shows a white crash screen.

“We have a fix in an upcoming software update for a bug that can occasionally cause a home screen crash,” Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller told Mashable.

Apple did not say when the software fix would be issued, but the company recently released iOS 7.1 to app developers. Apple may include the bug fix in that version of iOS once it releases it to regular users.
