Foxconn denies report it is working on Apple iTV
Foxconn, Apple’s biggest manufacturer, denied reports it was preparing to begin producing an Apple iTV after the Web went wild with rumors after a report from China.
The company refuted the rumors after stories were published over the weekend claiming the company’s chief executive, Terry Gua, had said Foxconn was “making preparations for iTV.”
The rumor appeared to have begun with a China Daily report published Friday. The story focused on a news conference held in Shanghai for Gua to discuss a new Foxconn headquarters being built in the city.
But later in the article, the paper included a section about the highly-rumored Apple TV.
“Gou said Foxconn is making preparations for iTV, Apple Inc.’s rumored upcoming high-definition television, although development or manufacturing has yet to begin,” the report said.
It then went on to note how the TV will include Siri, Facetime and an aluminum construction. But CNN Money said China Daily was alone in its reports of Gua’s statements concerning the rumored Apple device.
Other major news outlets -- Bloomberg News, Reuters and Associated Press -- wrote about the company’s new facility but did not mention a TV.
Foxconn on Monday said that Gua did not confirm work on the device and that he made it clear he would not confirm or speculate on an Apple TV.
“At no time did he confirm that Foxconn was in development or manufacturing stages for any product for any of its customers.... Any reports that Foxconn confirmed that it is preparing to produce a specific product for any customer are not accurate,” a Foxconn representative told The Next Web.
