Facebook has acquired Face.com, an Israeli start-up that specializes in facial-recognition software.

The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. But the acquisition had been speculated in recent weeks, and some reports said Facebook could have spent anywhere from $80 million to $100 million for the start-up.

Among Face.com’s products are Face Tagger, a Facebook app, and KLIK, an iOS app. The start-up also has a public API that it hosts on its site.

News of the acquisition was reported by Bloomberg and was confirmed by Facebook.

“People who use Facebook enjoy sharing photos and memories with their friends, and Face.com’s technology has helped to provide the best photo experience,” a spokeswoman for Facebook said in an email. “This transaction simply brings a world-class team and a long-time technology vendor in house.”

Facebook’s take over of Face.com is the latest big purchase by the social network in recent months.

In April, the Menlo Park, Calif., company spent $1 billion for Instagram, and last month, Facebook hired the staff of the Android app known as Lightbox as well as the staff of the design firm Bolt | Peters.
