Google Field Trip, a location-based discovery app, comes to iPhone

Google Field Trip, an app that alerts users of interesting places as they travel, has arrived on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The app, which launched for Android devices last September, sends users notifications as they near interesting locations, such as landmarks or popular restaurants.

“Field Trip can help you learn about everything from local history to the latest and best places to shop, eat and have fun,” the app’s description says.

After users download the app, they decide how often they want to be notified. They can choose no notifications, occasional notifications or frequent notifications if they want to explore. They then sign in using their Gmail account.

Users can wait to receive notifications or they can open the app and see a list of interesting notes and places nearby. They can also see notes by looking on a map. Additionally, users can choose to have the app read them information when they get a notification -- a useful feature if they want to keep their eyes on the road.

The app can be downloaded now from the Apple App Store.
