Google adds 350,000 more miles of roads, 50th country to Street View

Google has just added its 49th and 50th country to its popular Street View feature, enabling Web browsers to check out locations like the Hungarian Parliament building, the European country’s Chain bridge or the largest medicinal bath in Europe, the Széchenyi thermal bath.

Street View, available with Google Maps, gives users 360-degree views of millions of locations around the globe, now including those in Hungary and Lesotho. The additon of the two countries Tuesday marks a major milestone for Street View, which launched in 2007 with just five U.S. cities.

Also on Tuesday, Google said it made the single largest update to Street View in its history, adding nearly 350,000 miles of roads throughout 14 countries.

The company said France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Singapore and Thailand all received some sort of update or expansion on Street View.

“From Antarctica to Australia, from South Korea to South Africa, from the snow-capped peaks of Everest to the Great Barrier Reef, you can navigate more than 5 million miles of the world, without ever leaving home,” Google said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, for Lesotho, the country that is surrounded and land locked by South Africa, users can check out its mountainous views, winding roads and its various lakes, Google said.
