LG, not just Samsung, working on curved-screen smartphone

Move over, Samsung. LG has its own curved-screen smartphone.

The South Korean company is planning a November release of a smartphone with a screen curved to fit nicely on the sides of users’ faces when they make calls, according to a report by CNET.

The phone is expected to be called the LG G Flex, and the device will feature a 6-inch display, according to CNET, which cites an unnamed source. Though the screen will be curved, the report says it won’t be such a dramatic curve that the device looks weird. To see a sketch of the device, head to CNET’s website.

The report says the G Flex will use a plastic OLED screen, the same type of technology Samsung is expected to use on a curved-screen smartphone that it has said will be unveiled this month.

LG and Samsung have been competing with curved OLED screens throughout 2013. Both companies announced and began selling the first and second curved OLED HD TVs earlier this year. Now, the South Korean rivals are taking the curved-screen battle to the smartphone market.

OLED technology allows companies to build thinner devices while delivering higher-quality images. Until recently, it had been problematic to mass-produce curved OLED screens, but it seems LG and Samsung may have found solutions.
