Microsoft cuts Surface Pro by $100 for back-to-school promotion
Hopping on the wave of back-to-schools specials, Microsoft is cutting the price of its Surface Pro tablet by $100.
The Redmond, Wash.-based tech company is selling the Surface Pro, a tablet capable of running a full version of its Windows 8 operating system, starting at $799 for a 64-gigabyte model. Meanwhile, the 128 GB model is down to $899.
Students with valid .edu email address can get an additional 10% off.
The back-to-school price, though, is only available for a limited time. Microsoft said the Surface Pro will be discounted through Aug. 30.
“We’ve been seeing great worldwide success with Surface RT pricing and keyboard-cover promotions over the past several months and are proud to offer Surface Pro at more affordable prices starting today,” the company told The Verge website.
The Surface Pro is much more expensive than other tablets, which typically start between $200 and $400, because it is capable of running an operating system built for desktops and laptops. That means that unlike on the Surface RT, users can install programs from outside of Microsoft’s app store, such as iTunes or other computer games.
Despite Surface Pro’s capabilities, it and the Surface RT have not been blockbuster sellers.
Last month, the company permanently cut the price of the Surface RT by $150 in order to unload inventory, and it also took a $900-million charge against its earnings as an “inventory adjustment” for the device.
