ParkMe, a Santa Monica-based start-up, has introduced an update for its iPhone app that brings live street parking information to downtown Los Angeles and Santa Monica.

The free app already provides drivers in 300 U.S. cities and other parts of the world with information on where to find cheap parking lots and garages. The update released Tuesday brings a new feature that shows drivers which streets have open parking spaces.

Drawing from data provided by the cities of Los Angeles and Santa Monica, the updated ParkMe app shows streets with open parking using a color system. Streets marked with green lines have open spaces, those with orange might have open spaces and those highlighted in red do not have any open spots.

ParkMe first introduced live street parking to its users in Austin, but because its founders are Los Angeles natives, they wanted to bring the feature home too.

Co-founder Sam Friedman said street parking is some of the most difficult parking to find in downtown Los Angeles, but now “we can now direct you to open spots so you don’t have to circle the block.”

You can download the updated version of ParkMe from the Apple App Store immediately. Additonally, ParkMe has told The Times that the Android version of its app is expected to arrive sometime in 2013.
