Samsung sells 100 million Galaxy S smartphones

Samsung announced Monday that it has sold more than 100 million of its Galaxy S smartphones since launching the line in 2010.

The South Korean company made the announcement with a series of photos posted to its Flickr account. The pictures show a group of people holding up phones with numbers on each one, collectively writing out “100,000,000.”

According to the Associated Press, Samsung has sold more than 25 million Galaxy S smartphones, 40 million Galaxy S II devices and 41 million units of the Galaxy S III, its current flagship phone.

Samsung’s sales tally comes as new reports suggest sluggish demand for rival Apple’s iPhone.

The Wall Street Journal said Apple had significantly cut orders for various components for the iPhone 5, such as its screens, for the current quarter.

Since Samsung launched the Galaxy S line, it has become one of the most popular brands of smartphones running Android, Google’s mobile operating system.

The Galaxy S line also helped make Samsung 2012’s top mobile phone manufacturer, knocking Nokia from the spot for the first time in 14 years.

Samsung is expected to release the next Galaxy S flagship phone sometime in the first half of 2013.
