Sony unveils ultra-HD 4K television, new Xperia tablet and phones
Sony Corp. unveiled its first ultra-high-definition television, along with a new tablet and three new smartphones, at a consumer electronics trade show Wednesday in Berlin.
Later this year, Sony said, it will start selling the television, called a 4K TV because it has nearly four times the resolution of typical 1,080-pixel HD sets.
The 4K technology is regarded as being the next step in TV technology.
Sony said its version will have an 84-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 3,840 pixels by 2,160. It will be available from Sony stores and other retailers.
The Japanese company also introduced the Xperia Tablet S, a 9.4-inch device running Google Inc.’s Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.
Sony said the Xperia tablet will come with features that will allow customers to control their TVs, Blu-ray players and audio systems. The tablet will run on an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor and include HDMI and SD card slots.
Starting Sept. 7, Sony will sell 16-gigabyte, 32-GB and 64-GB models of the tablet for $399, $499 and $599, respectively.
The company also introduced three new devices for its Xperia line of smartphones: the Xperia T, V and J.
The Xperia T will be the new flagship phone for the company, according to the Verge. It will feature a 4.6-inch screen, a 13-megapixel camera and a 1.5 gigahertz processor and will use the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system at launch. Sony said it would upgrade the operating system to Android’s Jelly Bean at some point.
