Cal State Long Beach ends lockdown over ‘credible threat’; student is arrested

A Cal State Long Beach student was arrested Monday afternoon after she made a threat of violence via email that prompted the campus to go on lockdown for less than an hour, according to preliminary information gathered by university police.

Cal State Long Beach Police Chief Fernando M. Solorzano said in a news conference about 5:30 p.m. that he couldn’t provide further details about what types of weapons the student said she would use but confirmed that the threat seemed to coincide with an appointment the student had at the Student Success Center.

Solorzano said the student was arrested without incident. No further details about her or the threat were provided.

University police learned of the email about 2:10 p.m. and, after an assessment of the credibility of the threat, sent out a campus-wide alert about 3:40 p.m., Solorzano said.

At 3:50 p.m., university police sent out a tweet urging everyone on campus “to move indoors and shelter in place immediately. If not on campus, stay away until further notice.” By 4:23 p.m., university police said the orders had been lifted.

“University Police currently have the sole suspect in custody,” the department said in a tweet. “There is no ongoing threat, and the campus is open for normal operations.”
