Roadway open following Ventura County crash that left 2 dead, 2 hospitalized

A head-on crash involving a sedan and a big rig left two people dead and two hospitalized in Ventura County on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The crash happened at 2:58 p.m. in the 5800 block of Grimes Canyon Road, just outside Moorpark city limits, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Arriving officers reported a small fire at the crash site, which was quickly extinguished, said Officer Ryan Ayers, a spokesman for the Highway Patrol’s Moorpark office.

Capt. Robert Welsbie, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department, said units were dispatched at 3 p.m. and treated two people.

Two were declared dead at the scene, Welsbie said. Their ages and genders were not available, but both were confirmed to have been occupants of the sedan.

The sedan’s other occupant had to be removed with tools like the jaws of life, he said.

Of the two surviving patients, one was the driver of the Peterbilt tractor-trailer and the other was a passenger in the Toyota sedan, Ayers said.

Both were transported to hospitals by ground ambulance, he said. The big rig’s driver suffered moderate injuries while the passenger in the Toyota suffered major injuries.

The roadway reopened at 6:24 p.m., according to the Highway Patrol.
