Small plane crashes into San Pedro soccer field, seriously injuring flight instructor and student
A flight instructor and a student aboard a small aircraft were seriously injured when the plane crashed in a soccer field Monday afternoon in San Pedro, authorities said.
The pilot was still inside the aircraft when emergency officials responded to the 400 block of Westmont Drive just before 1 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The single-engine Sling plane crashed in a field southeast of Torrance Municipal Airport, said a spokesperson with the Federal Aviation Administration.
A spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board, which has opened an investigation into the crash, said a student and a flight instructor were aboard the plane.
Sling Pilot Academy in Torrance, a nearby flight school that uses Sling aircraft such as the one that crashed, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
There was no fire when paramedics arrived and there were no other people aboard the plane. Both people involved in the crash, whose ages and genders were not yet disclosed, were taken to a hospital in “at least” critical condition, the LAFD said.
