A Santa Monica College employee is in critical condition after they were shot on campus Monday evening in what police are describing as a “workplace violence incident.”

The shooting took place at the Center for Media and Design, a satellite campus on Stewart Street, shortly before 10 p.m., according to a news release from Santa Monica College. The site is also home to public radio station KCRW.

The employee was taken to a hospital in critical condition and the shooter remains at large. Police said this was not a random attack and that the incident was work-related. All Santa Monica College campuses will be closed Tuesday for the well-being of the community, according to officials.

The Santa Monica Police Department is leading the shooting investigation with assistance from campus police and the college, authorities said. Erika Aklufi, a public information officer with the Santa Monica Police Department, said there is no threat to the general public.

Authorities do not believe the shooter is still in Santa Monica and plan to release more information as the investigation unfolds.

“We will be providing extra patrols around our schools today to further our connection with our students and their parents,” Santa Monica Police said in a news release.
