Alec Baldwin’s Tony-nominated ‘Orphans’ to close early on Broadway
“Orphans” could not find a home on Broadway.
Producers announced Monday that the Tony-nominated drama starring Alec Baldwin will close May 19 after 64 performances. The limited engagement was to run through June 30 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.
Lyle Kessler’s 1983 tale about two orphaned brothers who take a rich man (Baldwin) hostage also stars Ben Foster in his Broadway debut and Tom Sturridge, who earned a lead actor Tony nomination.

The play is also a contender for best revival drama.
Reviews for the play were mostly mixed, and “Orphans” received attention for a reported backstage feud between Baldwin and the originally cast Shia LaBeouf.
The “Transformers” star was prepping for his would-be Broadway debut in February when he abruptly left the production over “creative differences,” according to producers. Foster later took LaBeouf’s place.
“Orphans” joins a growing list of Tony-nominated plays this season with shortened stage lives.
“The Testament of Mary,” which earned Tony noms for best play, lighting and sound, ended its run Sunday after 16 regular performances.
The new musical “Hands on a Hardbody,” which earned Tonys nominations for best actor (Keith Carradine) and best original score, closed last month after 28 regular performances.
