Banksy watch: Street artist bids farewell to New York
Banksy officially bade farewell to New York on Thursday after spending the month of October in the city creating random street art at public sites in all five boroughs.
The anonymous British artist posted a message on his official website Thursday: “And that’s it. Thanks for your patience. It’s been fun. Save 5pointz. Bye.” The artist’s mention of “5pointz” refers to the street-art and graffiti exhibition space in Long Island City that has been threatened with demolition.
Banksy’s most recent purported creation in New York is an inflatable throw-up piece spelling out “Banksy!” on the side of a building in Queens.
ART: Can you guess the high price?
This week, the artist made waves by auctioning off a Nazi-themed work of art that was apparently created by adding an SS officer to a thrift store landscape painting. Titled “The Banality of the Banality of Evil,” in an apparent homage to journalist Hannah Arendt’s “Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil,” the painting is currently going for more than $310,000 in an online auction that is scheduled to end Thursday evening.
Proceeds from the auction will go to benefit Housing Works, a Brooklyn organization helping people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS.
On Wednesday, the artist was apparently at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, where he created an outdoor painting depicting a leopard.
Some of Banksy’s New York artwork was removed or painted over shortly after their creation, prompting some of the artist’s fans to demand that they be preserved.
