Eli Broad museum at Michigan State University sets Nov. 9 opening
Eli Broad’s new contemporary art museum at his alma mater, Michigan State University, has set a new opening date of Nov. 9. The museum, designed by architect Zaha Hadid, had originally been expected to debut in April, but had to postpone the opening due to a delay in construction.
The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at MSU will feature approximately 46,000 square feet of space. The L.A billionaire donated $28 million for the museum, with $21 million going toward construction of the facility and $7 million for acquisitions, exhibitions and other functions.
The total cost of the museum is $45 million, with the difference coming from fundraising.
Construction on the museum at the East Lansing campus began in March 2010. The museum had been set to open April 21, but a delay reportedly arose from a problem with glass panels that did not fit properly.
Broad is also building a contemporary art museum in downtown L.A., with construction already underway for an expected opening some time in 2014. The Broad, located on Grand Ave., will have as much as 100,000 square feet of space, and has an estimated cost of $130 million.
The L.A. museum is designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro.
