Eloisa Maturen working with Gustavo Dudamel, Frank Gehry on ‘Ay Carmela’

Eloisa Maturén, the wife of conductor Gustavo Dudamel, will star in a Los Angeles stage production of the popular Spanish play “Ay Carmela!” that will feature music by her husband and sets by architect Frank Gehry.

The production, which comes from the Stella Adler Theatre and is scheduled to open Nov. 14 at the Hudson Mainstage Theatre in Hollywood, replaces the previously announced “Death and the Maiden” that Maturén had been expected to appear in.

A spokesman for the production said that the creative team had been working on “securing the rights to ‘Death and the Maiden’ and finally decided they wanted to do a piece that brought together music, dance and theater that spoke more to the current political climate.”

“Ay Carmela!” was written by noted Spanish playwright José Sanchis Sinisterra and will be presented in an adaptation by Nilo Cruz and Catalina Botello. The play will be directed by Alberto Arvelo.

Maturén, who is in the midst of a divorce from Dudamel, will star alongside actor Alejandro Furth.

The play follows two characters, Carmela and Paulino, who are vaudeville performers traveling with their act during Spain’s Civil War. The play brings together comedy, flamenco and the drama of wartime.

Dudamel is the music and artistic director of the L.A. Philharmonic.

“Ay Carmela!” is scheduled to preview on Nov. 13 and will open the following day. The play is slated to run through Dec. 13.
